What style of Tai Chi do you teach?
We teach Yang family style Tai Chi Chuan, although we borrow aspects of other styles where we judge them to be appropriate
What are the Tai Chi classes like?
Our beginners classes typically start with a warm up of either gentle standing Yoga exercises or QiGong which will stretch you, enliven your body and calm your mind.
The main focus of the class will then be to progress the student through
whatever form they are on. Our tai chi syllabus is rather extensive; containing much more work than one can touch on in a single lesson. Therefore the instructor could decide to teach a breathing and meditation exercise one class, and practical application with a partner the next.
Are the classes appropriate for me?
All the classes we advertise on our website are perfect for beginners of all ages. We don't have an upper age limit; many of our students are retired.
We do not run classes for children however if they can behave like an adult withour additional supervision they are welcome to attend.

I don't think I'm very healthy!
Many people these days are feeling the negative effects of living in a stressful environment. Our health is suffering as a result of worrying about work and this leads to us forming harmful habits and addictions, such as having a bad diet, doing little or no physical exercise, and smoking or drinking a little too much. It can seem almost impossible to find a type of activity we can imagine getting on with that will help us break this negative cycle. We have tried the gym and find it un-fulfilling can't imagine swimming or jogging and can't find a safe place to cycle, this adds to our negativity and the vicious circle continues. What people need is something they feel they can do, something that is not for gymnasts or the super fit, but something that will give them positive benefits while stimulating their interest and imagination. At Seven Stars Internal Arts we teach our classes with a keen memory of what it is like to be a beginner. All of our students start their training with exactly the same doubts as everyone else, but soon find they can do the simple exercises we teach, and they also find that they are just like everybody else in the class. Whether you choose to try tai chi or yoga you will enjoy the experience.
What is a 'Form'?
A form is a physical textbook. You learn a series of movements in a set pattern and learn to link the movements together in the correct way. This teaches you how to stand, move, and breathe in the correct way. A form can be performed solo, with a partner or with a weapon. One of the most recognisable forms of all is: the Tai Chi long form. This is the thing that for most people typifies Tai Chi, the slow graceful movements we have all seen (perhaps on the television) of people in China or the far- east, exercising in the park in the mornings.
What is Chi?
Chi is the Chinese term for the natural energy we all possess. You learn to
cultivate, store and use your chi by practicing meditation, Tai Chi, QiGong,
Yoga or any number of similar exercises. By promoting healthy and abundant chi you improve your health and increase your physical abilities.
What is QiGong (Chi Gung or Chi Kung)
QiGong exercises have been developed over many hundreds of years to develop, strengthen, store and direct chi within the body. The Chinese believe that when your chi is out of balance, illness occurs. You use QiGong to balance and strengthen your chi.
In martial arts chi can be used to strengthen and support physical movement. If you can understand the concept of an acupuncturist putting a needle in your body to clear a chi blockage, you may be able to understand the concept of directing your mind to the same point in the correct way (under the direction of an instructor) to achieve similar results.
Will Tai Chi make me fit?
It would be more accurate to say tai chi will make you healthy, although
increased fitness is a natural by-product of the training.
What are the benefits of Tai Chi?
Practicing Tai Chi will reduce your feeling of stress. Tai Chi will improve
circulation by encouraging the heart to pump more strongly (as opposed to
faster). It will keep your glandular and nervous system healthy. It will strengthen your muscles and stretch the ligaments and tendons.
Tai Chi will improve your posture and balance and of course develop your chi. One of the most important benefits is that you discover an incredibly enjoyable and engrossing pastime. The main reason people keep doing Tai Chi year after year is that they really enjoy it!
Is Tai Chi a martial art; Will I be expected to learn to fight?
The way you learn traditional Tai Chi is to understand how its practical martial applications apply to chi flow and therefore increase chi control. This
ultimately increases your health, because in order to apply chi control, you
must have an abundant amount of chi. If you have an abundant amount of chi you are going to be healthy. Tai chi is a martial art, but we are not interested in teaching people who want to fight. We only want people to understand their chi.
I have loads of experience already, will the classes be worth me attending?
We have many martial artists already in our classes with decades of experience and lots of our students come to us after practising Tai Chi for years with other schools and instructors.
Sifu Andy Cullen has over 30 years of experience and teaches a full Tai Chi Chuan syllabus including advanced martial applications, weapons training, classical QiGong, breathing and meditation, body mechanics and philosophy.
Advanced training in specific subjects is covered by our regular seminars and workshops.
